Hangar 2 & 3 of the airport building had come into the focus of public attention in 2022, because they had been given to the cultural manager Walter Smerling under exclusion of the public and the parliament in the context of a backroom deal initiated by the ex-mayor Michael Müller - rent-free and subsidized with a transfer of incidental costs of up to € 100,000 per month (FAZ). The broad, united protest of the Berlin cultural scene and urban society against this resulted in much coverage, in a boycott, the multiple signing of an open letter, and the withdrawal of artworks in rows from Walter Smerling's exhibition "Diversity United", which was running in parallel in Moscow under Putin's patronage. The protest was successful! The so-called Kunsthalle ends after only one exhibition, Walter Smerling's association does not get a contract extension for the further use of the hangars. On the last day of the exhibition, we celebrated the symbolic handing over of the keys to the Berliner.
